Ma'avarim
"passageways" or "crossings" in Hebrew

Our goal is to empower and support members of the trans community, facilitating both personal and social change.

Our activities are divided into three main areas:

  • Personal Support – To provide the support needed for transgender and gender variant people and their loved ones in their daily lives and their journey. Support is provided through personal contact with members of
    the trans community.

  • Trans Community Empowerment – To build community resources and knowledge, through research, partnerships, and training.

  • Social change, lobby, and advocacy - To advocate for social change on issues related to the trans community, working together with legislators, policy makers, the media, and agents of change.

Background and Main Challenges of the Trans community

Transgender people are people whose assigned sex at birth does not match their gender. According to recent studies, it is estimated that trans and gender variant people are 6% of the population. While Israel boasts itself as LGBT friendly, the reality of trans and gender variant people in Israel is similar to that of the gay community 30 years ago: trans people are ridiculed in the media, discriminated against, not fully protected by the law, cast out by their communities and families, many are marginalized towards poverty and sexwork.
Lack of knowledge regarding the trans community, in the education system, welfare, policing, social services, healthcare and more render these services discriminatory, inaccessible and even violent.

Some of our programs:

  • Halomot (Dreams) - A unique program that teaches "empolyability" skills for trans people at risk who have either dropped out of school or have difficulty entering the work force. We provide a safe and supportive space to allow the completion of studies; we also arrange workshops, and professional training towards employment.
In partnership with Tel Aviv Municipality, and Israeli National Insurance.

  • The Next Generation – Young leadership group providing trans youth with support, empowerment, and social opportunities to interact with peers through activism.

  • A voice of her own- Empowering sessions of voice "feminization" for trans women and girls. Professional voice training can help trans women and girls "pass" as women, and avoid exposure to discrimination, it can also boost confidence.

  • Bruchot Habaim (All are welcome) - Ma'avarim's hotline and welcoming service provides information and referrals for a wide range of individuals, including family, friends, and healthcare providers. We provide assistance with paperwork, bureaucracy, institutions, and emotional support for those who need it. Our trained volunteers provide the service in Hebrew, English, Arabic, and Russian.
